Volunteer Physicians for Second Opinion Tumor Boards

Volunteer Physicians for Second Opinion Tumor Boards

Thesecondopinion, a nonprofit located in San Francisco, is seeking physician volunteers that will assist in providing free second opinions to adults in California diagnosed with cancer. The second opinions are done over Zoom with the cancer patient and 3-5 cancer specialists.

We seek hem/oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, urologists and surgeons. Currently radiologists are our most urgent need. For more information on our current volunteers please visit https://thesecondopinion.org/for-doctors/

Our tumor boards provide the rewarding experience of giving back to our California communities in need.  Use your knowledge, compassion, and experience to provide unbiased 2nd opinions to adults with cancer via zoom, at your convenience and help thesecondopinion improve health outcomes for cancer patients disproportionately impacted by health disparities.

SCHEDULE: We have 2-3 Tumor Boards each month on Wednesdays or Fridays from 11 am to 2:30 pm. Volunteer as little or as much as your schedule allows.

Requirements
The volunteers’ scope of work is like any other tumor board, except each patient consultation is a one-on-one teleconference with the patient, their family, and the other participating volunteer physicians. (Oncologist, Pathologist, Radiation Oncologist, and other sub-specialists)

Radiologists can review patient images online with our cloud based software (Ambra Health). They will review the imaging findings and reports with the tumor board physicians and show the  images to the patient, when appropriate and explain the findings to them. Often, this may be the first opportunity that the patient has seen their imaging studies, and to have an explanation of their findings by the radiologist.

  • Volunteer Physician must hold an Active or Volunteer California Board Certified Medical License
  • Have a device that has reasonable internet, camera and audio for Zoom.

Our staff will collect all necessary medical records, imaging and pathology for each patient. We provide malpractice insurance from The Doctors Company for physicians that volunteer with thesecondopinion.

Contact Howard Kleckner, M.D., Medical Director at hbkleckner@thesecondopinion.org for more information on this unique opportunity.
