Hospital Mergers Affect Quality of Care

A high of 115 hospital or health system mergers occurred in 2017, and a recent study found three key sources of safety risks because of system expansion. These sources are changes in patient populations, unfamiliarity with new infrastructure, and insufficient orientation to new practice settings. The study recommended that clinicians be included early in the merger process so that they can arrange to fill gaps and coordinate and standardize clinical care.
