Giving Tuesday: The ACCMA Medical Student Scholarship Fund

What’s Giving Tuesday?

“GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.” https://www.givingtuesday.org/

Our Ask

When considering charitable options of where to give this upcoming holiday season, we ask you to consider the ACCMA’s Medical Student Scholarship Fund. Scholarships benefit students of the UCSF/UCB Joint Medical Program, where the funds are applied toward a summer field research study or a community health-focused summer internship with the ACCMA.

Our goal:
To reinvigorate students’ passion for healthcare along with provide additional funding opportunities for students to relieve the high debt burden. We hope to make a small impact on the physician pipeline. A recent AAMC report reinforces concerns about physician shortages – even estimating we could have a shortage of between 37,800 and 124,000 physicians by 2034. Further, the National Resident Matching Program noted that 2,603 US Residency positions were left unfilled by graduating medical students in 2023.

Words from our 2023 scholarship recipients:

"The ACCMA scholarship alleviated the financial costs of studying a huge population who is experiencing housing insecurity in San Francisco. As a first-generation college student, I benefited from this award tremendously!" -Elizabeth Hoang

"Being afforded the opportunity to participate in and receive funding from the ACCMA has played a pivotal role in fostering my professional development and medical education. I am genuinely grateful for the chance to contribute as a Health Equity Intern, an experience that has been invaluable in expanding my knowledge of health systems and professional societies. I look forward to further engagement and continued learning from the impactful work undertaken by the ACCMA." -Hannah El-Sabrout

"The ACCMA scholarship helps students like myself fund their research projects and advance their community work. Being able to engage in activities we are passionate about shapes us into compassionate and revolutionary healers in the future!" -Aparna Manocha

Please consider helping us fund more medical students in the future, ultimately helping students work on vital community health projects and find joy in the practice of medicine.
